Traction electric drive for special equipment
When using construction, agricultural, of mining, construction, and other special machinery, Vehicles powered by internal combustion engines incur costs due to the regular need for fuel delivery and storage. Switching specialized equipment to electric traction helps save budget and also expands modernization opportunities.
Rubruks has developed a traction electric drive system that allows a vehicle with an internal combustion engine and hydraulic transmission to be converted to autonomous electric operation by integrating components of Russian production.

The system assumes two implementations:
Complete replacement of the hydraulic transmission with an electric transmission consisting of four electric traction motors RUBRUKS HVM-PM1-85, controlled by four RUBRUKS NTPI-600-130 traction inverters, which allows for flexible control of each wheel through an electric differential, as well as saving electrical energy through regenerative braking.
1. Electricity accumulation: is implemented by four battery modules RUBRUKS HVB-307-100, united into a single removable unit. The operating temperature of the battery is maintained using thermoregulation block.
2. Switching: the components listed above are assembled into a single power supply system via Rubruks high-voltage switching unit. When this development is used in lifting equipment, the hydraulic power unit is also connected, which drives the lifting mechanisms.
3. Low-voltage onboard electrical system power supply:
DC-DC converter RUBRUKS VCGI-600-24-4, ; converting 600 V high-voltage network to 24 V for the onboard network.
2) A 24V low-voltage battery that powers lighting and indicators in case of a high-voltage network outage, and also allows powering other external consumers, which increases the potential for modernization.
4. Diagnostics: RUBRUKS VCGI-600-24-4 designed for fast recording of system operation information onto the CAN bus for statistical data collection, diagnostics, or troubleshooting abnormal situations.
5. Charging: In case of prolonged parking, the system is equipped with an onboard charger. RUBRUKS RBC-600-22, which allows charging the battery from a standard 220V outlet.
The second version of the traction electric drive system involves replacing the internal combustion engine with one high-power unit. Traction electric motor RUBRUKS HVM-PM1-350, powering a hydraulic pump station that transmits rotation to the wheels and lifting mechanisms.
The electric motor is controlled by two traction inverters RUBRUKS NTPI-600-250. With this option, the 4 hydraulic motors for the wheels are retained, which means fewer structural changes compared to the first scheme. However, energy regeneration is not possible with this option.
Energy accumulation, high- and low-voltage electrical grids, switching, charging, and the machine operation data collection system are implemented similarly to the first diagram.
Thus, implementing our solution at your company will help increase the return on investment and reliability of your equipment. Let's compare the fuel costs for internal combustion engines (ICE) and electricity using a diesel and an electric mining loader as an example:
| Diesel engine | Electric drive | |
|---|---|---|
| Average fuel consumption | 17 L/h | 59 kW |
| Work shift duration | 12 hours | 12 hours |
| Total fuel/energy consumption | 204 L/day | 708 kWh/day |
| Cost of fuel / energy | 57 RUB/L | 5 RUB/kWh |
| Total fuel / energy cost | 11,628 rubles/day | 3,540 rubles/day |
The table shows that, in terms of fuel/electricity costs, an electric tractor's work shift is more than 3 times more cost-effective, saving 8,088 rubles per day. The annual fuel savings will be 2.7 million rubles.
Thanks to the fact that the electric motor does not come into contact with air during operation, its maintenance is also more cost-effective compared to an internal combustion engine, which requires regular oil and some part replacements.
