Hybrid drive for a recreational boat
Modern yachts and pleasure boats are equipped with a large number of electrical consumers. In addition to standard shipboard electrical equipment (navigation systems, thrusters, lighting, and indicators), onboard household appliances also need to be supplied with electricity.
During prolonged stops on vessels with diesel power plants, it is impossible to operate electrical appliances without starting the diesel engine. That is why more and more shipowners are choosing hybrid solutions for boats, which allow the use of both traditional energy sources and modern hybrid technologies.
The RUBRUKS team has developed a traction electric drive system integrated with an onboard power supply system, enhancing the autonomous operation capabilities of yachts and pleasure boats.

Our developed solution is an efficient hybrid system for a boat, capable of providing power to the vessel under various conditions.
System structure:
01
Energy sources
The system uses 3 batteries as energy sources:
- 2 high voltage battery module RUBRUKS HVB-360-50 (360 V, NMC) for powering onboard consumers
- 1 low voltage (24 V, Lithium Iron Phosphate4) as a backup battery.
02
energy generation
For energy generation, there are two possible operating modes for the system:
- Energy from the solar panels enters the input of the unified RUBRUKS STDU-360 traction drive unit, then goes to the high-voltage bus and is distributed among 220 V and 24 V consumers; excess energy goes to charge the battery packs.
- Use of internal combustion engine and traction electric motor RUBRUKS MVM-PM1-60 as a generator set for charging battery banks.
03
electric drive
The RUBRUKS STDU-360 traction electric drive unit is a compact electronics unit assembled in a single housing on one cooling plate. It includes:
- 150 kW traction inverter,
- 6.6 kW onboard charger (charger),
- 2 kW DC-DC converter,
- main control unit,
- High-voltage switching unit.
04
DC-AC voltage converter
High-voltage consumers are connected using DC-AC voltage converter (pure sine wave) RUBRUKS NPI-360-220-7, converting 360 V DC from battery packs to 220 V AC.
05
CAN logger
RUBRUKS CL3-2C CAN logger with the remote diagnostics module, it records system operation data from the CAN bus and allows for diagnostics and statistical data collection.

Advantages:
- The RUBRUCS solution increases the vessel's operating time without refueling and recharging.
- The large battery capacity allows for extended vessel standby and operation of all electrical appliances without running the internal combustion engine.
- On sailing yachts, electrical power is recovered through the propeller when the vessel is sailing.
- Hybrid power sources on ships provide an optimal balance between performance and fuel economy.
Since 2019, our company has been manufacturing components for traction electric drive systems and onboard power supplies, as well as developing complex solutions from scratch.
The catalog features electric motors, battery modules, power electronics, and peripheral equipment are presented, suitable for building hybrid and electric vessels, including charging stations and energy storage systems.
